Oscars 2022: 10 Fan Favourite Category Nominees Ranked From Least To Most Likely To Win
5. Cinderella
Cinderella is perhaps the best example of how the Academy misunderstood the power of fandom. Critics and audiences alike were unimpressed by the 2021 modernisation of the Cinderella story. However, critical acclaim and audience appreciation aren't as powerful as the sheer unadulterated loyalty of an ardent fan.
Singer Camila Cabello, who plays Cinderella in the 2021 retelling, has 12.7 million followers on Twitter and numerous fan accounts dedicated to sharing images, videos and well... Oscar hashtags. Cabello's Cinderella feels like the outside bet for the winning film, purely because of the power of her fans. Throw in the involvement of the much-loved Idina Menzel and Pitch Perfect director Kay Cannon, and you have a film that is almost laser pointed in its acute appeal to musical theatre kids on social media. Not even a James Corden appearance could derail the film's popularity with those fans.
Cinderella's nomination is a celebration of an artist that means a lot to people, but it doesn't have the crucial factor behind some of these other entries: a victim complex. Those who enjoyed Cabello's updated fairy tale couldn't care less about awards "snubs" or "clueless critics". And that lack of anger and frustration is why they'll lose.
