Oscars 2022: All 20 Actors Who Could Get Their First Oscar Nomination
4. Emilia Jones - CODA
Though critically acclaimed Sundance indie CODA was sold to Apple for a record-setting $25 million, the film was released without much fanfare over the summer, which certainly harm its chances at wider awards success.
However, voters may struggle to ignore the superb acting showcase from the entire cast, especially English actress Emilia Jones, who portrays the titular CODA - that is, Child of Deaf Adults - as she attempts to balance her own ambitions with the day-to-day realities of her deaf family.
Given that Jones isn't American nor did she know American Sign Language prior to the film, it's a tremendously demanding role and one which she commits to wholeheartedly. There's never a moment where you don't believe her performance.
CODA is basically "the little indie that could" throughout this Oscar season, and while it'd surprise few to see it snubbed entirely - especially as it's cloistered away on AppleTV + - it totally deserves a couple of nods.
