Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza)

Kenneth Branagh (Belfast)

Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog)

Steven Spielberg (West Side Story)

Denis Villeneuve (Dune)

There's unlikely to be much in the way of surprises here: these five filmmakers were all nominated by both the Directors Guild of America and Critics' Choice, with all but Anderson also nominated for a Golden Globe.

It's always fun to see a passion pick slip into the five - which this year would be Pedro Almodovar (Parallel Mothers), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter), Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), or Guillermo del Toro (Parallel Mothers) - but it's difficult to picture any of them displacing Anderson.

It's a strong category filled with incredible talent, even if the writing has been on the wall for months so it's a pretty boring field to predict.
