An extremely tough category to pick a winner in, but Steven Spielberg did what many thought impossible with West Side Story - both updating and arguably bettering a beloved classic.

Spielberg's direction is the legendary filmmaker's most alive and dynamic in many years, with all the flashy hunger you'd expect from a much younger director.

Who Will Win: Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog)

Jane Campion is basically a shoo-in at this point given her success on the circuit, and it'll be an historic moment for two reasons: it'll be the first time in history any woman has won two Best Director Oscars, and the first time two women have won Best Director back-to-back. You love to see it.
