Oscars 2024 Review: 10 Ups & 6 Downs
2. Al Pacino's Awkward Best Picture Reveal
On paper, having the great Al Pacino present the Best Picture Oscar seems like a slam dunk, and yet, he somehow managed to present the award - which, deservedly, went to Oppenheimer - in the most hilariously anti-climactic way possible.
Rather than read the names of all the nominated films - or wait for a montage of the nominees to be shown - Pacino simply opened the envelope and said, "My eyes see Oppenheimer."
It was such a flat way of announcing the Best Picture winner that there was a noticeable pause before the theater erupted into applause for Christopher Nolan's epic drama.
Pacino has since addressed the awkwardness of the reveal, claiming in a statement reported by Variety that it was the producers' decision to forgo naming the list of nominees in favour of simply announcing the winner instead. In any case, something to avoid in next year's ceremony.
