Oscars 2014: 10 Hopeful Best Picture Contenders

9. Captain Phillips

Chance: Sure Fire Right from the beginning, this movie checks several Academy boxes. Based off of a True Story? Check. Controversial subject matter? Depends on how you look at it. Previous award rewardee lending the film gravitas? Double check. A plot with social relevance? Check. This movie could be Paul Greengrass' first stab at a Best Director not, with Tom Hanks getting yet another nod for Best Actor and Billy Ray possibly getting a Best Adapted Screenplay nom out of this. But the movie, released in October, did little to set the world on fire for either audiences or critics. It's not that the movie or the story aren't well known, it's just that they were both out of the public eye before we knew it. (Also, it doesn't help that the crew of the actual Maersk Alabama vessel are rather displeased with the dramatisation of the actual events.) It's sure to make noise, but all the other films will be just a bit louder.
