Oscars 2014: 10 Hopeful Best Picture Contenders

8. Gravity

Chance: Very Good The first, and probably only, film of this year's crop that manages to totally avoid the "grounded" tone of all of the others that are mentioned in this article. In fact, you could pretty much consider this the "sci-fi dark horse" nominee that the Academy loves to throw movie goers in order to keep them interested. Basically, this film's nomination says to the audience: "Hey, remember that movie you all freaked out over and saw a bunch of times in October? Well, look here, it's been nominated for Best Picture! We're relevant again!" However, the other reason this flick will be nominated is because much like the audience, the Academy probably freaked out with this movie too. Don't expect it to win though, because this is a film that depends on how you experience it, and not all of the Academy members have an IMAX theater to go to. The best we can really hope for is Best Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Screenplay, with a possible nod to Sandra Bullock for Best Actress.
