Oscars Nominations 2022: 8 Ups & 9 Downs

2. Surprise: Drive My Car Scores Best Picture & Best Director Nominations

Drive My Car
Bitters End

A far more plausible question mark than Spider-Man: No Way Home was Ryusuke Hamaguchi's near-universally acclaimed drama Drive My Car.

Over the last few months the Japanese film had picked up a firm head of steam as a serious awards contender beyond a sole Best International Feature nomination.

And that hope transpired into success when Hamaguchi's film landed an impressive four nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and indeed Best International Feature.

While it hasn't got a chance in hell of winning Picture or Director, this is absolutely a case of the nomination being the win, and will hopefully expose a much wider audience to Hamaguchi's impressive body of work.
