Captain Marvel filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck followed up their trek into the blockbuster sausage factory with a film that couldn't feel more polar opposite.

Freaky Tales is a bewilderingly strange anthology film focused on four interconnected stories set in Oakland, California in 1987.

Without giving too much away, these scenarios include a turf war between punks and skinheads, a rap battle for the ages, a criminal (Pedro Pascal) seeking redemption for his life, and an NBA All-Star (Jay Ellis) exacting bloody revenge.

Boden and Fleck's film is aggressively, enchantingly odd from start to finish, taking many unexpected storytelling left-turns which are clearly relished by a distinguished cast excited to do something thoroughly off-piste.

Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, and a cameoing Tom Hanks are especially fun to watch in an anthology that effortlessly captures the vibe of late-eighties California while constantly doing the thing you never expect it to. More films like this, please.
