Few films embody the ethos of "create with what you have" better than Obex - a dizzying new micro-budget sci-fi film from Albert Birney which was produced for just $15,000.

Birney stars as Conor Marsh, a man whose solitary life is upended when he plays a video game called OBEX. When his dog Sandy is abducted into the game, Conor enters the world of OBEX to save his beloved pet.

Though shot with simple camera gear and a tiny cast, Obex is absolutely overflowing with invention from start to finish, Birney smartly employing monochrome cinematography and low-fi retro computer game graphics to achieve his vision within budgetary constraints.

Obex ended up premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival to raucous acclaim, though it's safe to say that it remains a niche enough project by its very nature that it hasn't been seen by nearly enough film lovers yet.

If you're a fan of DIY indie filmmaking or retro video games, you owe it to yourself to give Obex a visit.
