Overlord Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs

2. It's Insanely Gory

Once the movie finally gets to the body horror insanity everyone came to see, it becomes clear where the majority of the production's efforts were spent.

The gore effects in Overlord's third act are stomach-churningly gross at times, giving audiences plenty of glimpses of brains, severed heads, compromised chest cavities and...all manner of Nazi experiments best left unspoiled.

Combining practical gore with some impressive digital effects - Dr. Waftner's CGI missing jaw, for instance, is particularly terrific - the film's finale is sure to leave audiences squirming at how far director Julius Avery decides to take the blood-letting at times.

It's undeniably disappointing that the gore wasn't spread more evenly throughout the film, but the climactic orgy of violence is quite a sight to see indeed. A set-piece involving a grenade instantly catapults itself to the top of 2018's most awe-inspiring cinematic kills.
