Overlord Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Rock Solid Performances

Overlord Wyatt Russell
Paramount Pictures

The characters may not be particularly interesting here, but they are elevated somewhat by the likeable and entertaining cast.

Leading the pack is Wyatt Russell - yes, father of Kurt - as steely Cpl. Ford, who does a marvellous job channelling his father's signature wit and charm. Elsewhere, relative newcomer Jovan Adepo is easy to root for as Pvt. Boyce, a more earnest and down-to-Earth soldier who effectively functions as the audience surrogate.

Elsewhere, virtual unknown Mathilde Ollivier brings some fun feminine energy to the movie as French civilian Chloe, and Game of Thrones' Pilou Asbæk is deliciously loathable as savage Nazi officer Dr. Wafner.

Again, it's a shame most of these roles are underwritten, but thanks to the effervescent performances, things could certainly be much, much worse.
