Pacific Rim 3: 10 Things We Want To See

8. Mako's Death Is Retconned

Nothing in Uprising was more infuriating than the demise of Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), getting the double disservice of first being resigned to a paper-pusher role and than being killed off before she can do anything remotely heroic or action-orientated.

Considering how little emotional impact Mako's death had, and how we technically never saw her die on-screen, it's probably for the best if her death is just retconned at the start of the third film.

Fans are mad enough about it that they'd probably accept Mako being revived, especially as the series isn't exactly a serious dramatic enterprise, and something as kitschy as this would actually suit the daft tone just fine.

How Likely Is It?: It's been widely speculated that Mako was killed off to give the Chinese characters more room to breathe, and therefore to appeal more blatantly to the lucrative Chinese market. With that in mind, Mako's return doesn't seem terribly likely, especially with DeKnight still leading the creative charge. 2/10
