Pacific Rim 3: 10 Things We Want To See
6. Stronger Character Development For The International Cast
If the original Pacific Rim felt like a genuine celebration of the international community with its diverse and somewhat fleshed-out cast of characters, Uprising by comparison made its roster of worldly heroes seem like a bit of an afterthought.
For starters, the abundance of Chinese characters was clearly a cynical attempt to pander to the Chinese market, while the international cadets were largely just cardboard cutouts without any personality at all (except for Ivanna Sakhno's Vik). Who, for instance, remotely remembers the likes of Suresh (Karan Brar) and Ryoichi (Mackenyu)?
The third film desperately needs to focus on making its supporting cast members feel like full-bodied human beings more than mere national tokens.
How Likely Is It?: Doubtful. Character development has never been a major concern for these films, and if Uprising's writers are still in charge next time, it's hard to imagine this being a priority when stereotypes will do just fine. 4/10
