Pacific Rim 3: 10 Things We Want To See

3. Newt Regains Control Of His Mind

Fans are extremely divided on what happens to Newt (Charlie Day) in Uprising, with it being revealed that not only is he drifting with a Kaiju brain for his own, erm, gratification, he's also working as an agent for the Precursors, and is effectively the film's primary antagonist.

It's a shocking twist that gets a few points for its sheer ballsiness, but it ultimately falls flat in execution, seemingly ruining Newt's loveable character rather than transforming him in a fitting or entertaining way.

The third film should bring classic Newt back, then, by finding a way to break the Precursors' hold on his mind. He can then spend the rest of the movie dealing with the residual effects of the mind control, serving as demented comic relief that should land on the right side of silly.

How Likely Is It?: The online response has been so vitriolic to Newt's turn that DeKnight just might change his tune here and quickly shift Newt's allegiance once again. After all, it's already implied that the third film will focus on Jake and co. taking the fight to the Precursors, which leaves the door wide open to introduce a wholly new antagonist from the Precursors' home world, the Anteverse.

It could go either way, basically. The idea of Newt remaining the baddie for a whole other movie is, honestly, preposterous (even for the standards of this franchise). 5/10
