Pacific Rim Extended Footage Review: 5 Ways It Will Rule This Summer

3. The Jaeger and The Kaiju

With the risk of stating the obvious, The Jaeger and The Kaiju are HUGE. Del Toro said he used Francisco Goya€™s painting, The Colossus for inspiration. The painting shows a giant towering over a valley with people and animals fleeing for their lives. Del Toro said he hoped to make the audience evoke a similar sense of awe when they watched the battles between the Jaeger and Kaiju. The Kaiju look amazing on screen. They might not look as cuddly as the colossi in Team Ico€™s 'Shadow Of The Colossus' video game, but they are still massive and deadly. Not only does each one look unique, each of them have their own special abilities. One might expel toxic fluid while another uses electricity. At least people won't look at them and label them a rip of the Cloverfield monster. And while the Jaeger are giant mechs, it is refreshing to see that the designers avoided making them look like a complex collection of moving parts. One of the issues with the Michael Bay Transformer designs is that they have too many moving parts. It didn't give them the €˜€™wow factor,€™€™ it made them annoying and jarring to look at. The Jaeger are much more simple in design and that works well to give them each a character, in the way the original G1 Transformers had.
