Pacific Rim Extended Footage Review: 5 Ways It Will Rule This Summer

1. The Action

The action between the Jaeger and Kaiju has the feel of an end-of-level boss fight. Especially with each Kaiju having unique abilities, it gives the conflicts the intensity that you might find in the God of War series and other games with memorable bosses. You also see echoes of the fights you might have seen in a Power Rangers episode, but obviously on a grander scale and without the cardboard sets. Another thing that is going in Pacific Rim€™s favour is that the action is coherent and easy to follow. From the scenes I saw, Del Toro avoided adding €˜€™intensity€™€™ by over using fast cuts and close up shaky cam. You can clearly make out who is punching who and where the next blow is coming from. More directors need to take lesson from this, nothing ruins a good action scene when you have no idea what is going on. With easy to follow action and impressive effects from ILM, the fights should be highlights that resonate with you for some time after you leave the cinema. Especially when one 25 minute fight sequence starts of in the sea and then concludes in outer space. Can't wait to see that one.
