Paul W.S. Anderson’s Films Ranked From Worst To Best

9. Resident Evil

Screen Gems

Anderson risked the considerable wrath of Resident Evil fans by essentially ignoring the games with this film version, and instead following a new character called Alice. This is a choice that divides Resi fans to this day; some love that films go off in their own insane direction, while others hate them for the same reason.

The first movie almost acts as prequel to the original game, with Milla leading a team of soldiers into an underground lab and facing off with zombies and a killer security system. It's decidedly lower budget than the rest of the series, so it lacks the insane stunts and action that later defined them. It’s a serviceable rip on Aliens, but aside from a couple of standout moments – like the laser hallway scene – it’s curiously flat.

Jovovich makes for a good action heroine though, and it’s littered with nice easter eggs for fans of the games.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
