Paul W.S. Anderson’s Films Ranked From Worst To Best
10. The Three Musketeers
Anderson managed to round up a quality cast for this sexed-up take on The Three Musketeers, including Christoph Waltz, Mads Mikkelsen and Luke Evans; somehow he also convinced Milla Jovovich to appear too.
The production design is fantastic and the cast is fun, but Anderson’s hyperactive tendencies don’t sit well here. He’s turned a classic adventure in a silly Saturday morning cartoon, the central heroes don’t have much chemistry together and Logan Lerman d’Artagnan is far too smug to be likeable. Surprisingly Orlando Bloom gives the best performance, hamming up a storm as one of the villains.
Anderson clearly wanted to give the film a lighter touch, something he’s not best equipped for. This results in James Corden appearing randomly as “comic” relief, which serves to suck the fun out of every scene he appears in. The film failed to kick off a franchise, and based on this evidence, we didn’t miss out.
