Paul W.S. Anderson’s Films Ranked From Worst To Best

Anderson's stylish directorial debut stars a young Jude Law as an aimless car thief whose destructive lifestyle threatens to destroy him and his friends. The director made the most of his tiny budget, managing to stage a few decent car chases and assembling a strong cast - including Jonathan Pryce and a cameo role for Sean Bean.

Shopping is a good deal more grounded than his later work too, focusing mainly on the relationship between Law and his girlfriend while they struggle to get out of their life of petty crime. For a director who soon discarded character development in favour of more explosions, he shows a good flair for dramatic scenes.

On the strength of his work here he was soon off to Hollywood and while he’s made more crowd-pleasing stuff since, Shopping showed there’s a thoughtful filmmaker hiding in there somewhere.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
