Paul W.S. Anderson’s Films Ranked From Worst To Best
3. Resident Evil: Retribution
Retribution is the point in the series where Anderson completely abandoned any semblance of plot or character development, deciding simply to cram as much action and pretty visuals as he could in 85 minutes. From that point of view, the film is a raging success, filled to the brim with great action scenes and flashy 3D camerawork.
It’s a hollow affair for sure and liberally rips off the Dawn Of The Dead remake and Aliens, but boy is it fun. It flies past plot holes with lightning speed, determined to get to the next setpiece. Highlights include a giant Licker chasing a car through a recreation of Moscow, characters from previous movies returning as evil clones – for absolutely no reason – and the final fight with Michelle Rodriguez that goes on for about a half hour.
It’s delirious, borderline surreal filmmaking, and approached with some beer and pizza, it’s a great night’s entertainment.
