Pet Sematary Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs
2. UP: The Ending
The ending of this movie is one that's cheesy as anything - but it's a fun way to finish on an unexpected note where everything else has felt so predictable. Without giving anything away since it's the only real surprise in the entire movie, the final act of the film takes some big liberties with the plot that prove the directors could have easily extrapolated something new and different for the rest of the narrative, and ran with it.
It doesn't quite fit with the sour dread that's planted throughout the rest of the story, and leans almost into comedy by its ridiculous premise - but that's exactly what a new take on the movie should have been. Where the rest of the film focuses on redoing in serious, dour tones, the end goes a little wild and shows some soul that's missing from the rest of the runtime.
The 1989 Pet Sematary is a campy mess, but it's beloved for that too. Horror works best with a little nod to its farcical side, so it's a shame to see that gone to waste throughout this new take on the old material. At least the ending decides to take its own direction, though this will be a turn off for some fans instead.
