Philip Seymour Hoffman: 10 Most Memorable Scenes

8. Mission: Impossible III (2006) - Ethan Hunt Meets Owen Davian

Hoffman's versatility led to his being cast as a hapless assistant, an enigmatic leader, a flamboyant writer and a coarse jerk. Rarely did he portray someone completely villainous, though, which makes his ice-cold turn as Owen Davian in Mission: Impossible III all the more special. The first meeting between the soulless arms dealer Davian and Tom Cruise's agent Ethan Hunt comes in the bathroom scene (pictured above), where Hoffman ended up playing both Davian and Hunt-disguised-as-Davian. Their first face-to-face meeting, though, comes later in a noisy airplane - and here Hoffman is deadly terrifying, calm as ever while he describes taking loved ones away, cold as ice in the most villainous role he ever took. The third installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise owes any laudation it receives to Hoffman's Davian.
