14. Cars 2
Cars 2 is the only Pixar movie you could call a complete failure. There really was no need for a sequel in the first place, the first movie was okay but didn't reach the heights of their best work and box office returns were tepid in comparison. But it's the Cars merchandise sales that rule all. Cars 2 is a movie motivated entirely by commerce and selling the maximum amount of toy cars possible, and watching the movie, it's clear to see Pixar were more interested in getting the toys right rather than forming any substantial plot. Away from the cynical motivations for the making of the movie, there's just not a lot there. The movie has an interesting premise, and it could have been an interesting spoof of the spy genre, but the whole thing stinks of laziness. The 'mistaken identity' plot device has been used hundreds of times before and from Pixar, it is reasonable to expect substantially better. The animation, as it always is with Pixar, is dazzling and locations such as Japan and London look superb, but Cars 2, on the whole, is a shallow, vapid affair, and the weakest link in Pixar's filmography.
