Pixar: Ranking Their Films From Best To Worst

12. Brave

brave The first Pixar movie to feature a female protagonist (voiced by Kelly MacDonald), Brave is pretty standard fare despite their attempt to change the traditional dynamic between mother and daughter in Disney movies. The obligatory witch is in there and despite the character depth, the plot is riddled with girl power cliches rather than important feminist statements. Brave is very much an earnest movie, but it's instantly forgettable and its suspect moral message has none of the power like the good Pixar movies. It took until 2012 for Pixar to make a female centred movie, and it's impossible to think of it as anything other than a disappointment. The film, despite its heroine, is a movie aimed at a male audience, Merida is very boyish and doesn't really give young girls a character they can relate to. Pixar have a reputation for breaking new ground and much like Cars, there's nothing overtly wrong with it, there's just nothing special about it either. Watch Tangled instead, it's much more fun.
