Predicting 10 Biggest Box Office Movie Bombs Of 2016
4. The Angry Birds Movie
While Hollywood has struggled for decades to make a great video game movie, adapting a freemium mobile game for the big screen is a virtually unheard of prospect. However, with the original Angry Birds and its multitude of spin-offs reportedly being downloaded over three billion times, the potential is there for a monster box office hit. So what is the movie doing on a list of the potential box office bombs of 2016? The appeal of Angry Birds comes from its hugely addictive nature; pretty much everybody with a phone has lost countless hours at home, in a car, bus, train or waiting room playing the game. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the same people are willing to spend the money to sit in a movie theater and watch the adventures of vaguely-familiar characters. There are a huge number of video games that have generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue from customers, yet have failed to translate that into commercial success for their respective big-screen adaptations. Despite partnering with Imageworks and Columbia Pictures, original developers Ruvio Entertainment are still taking a huge gamble on the project, reportedly investing $100m into developing, producing and marketing the $80m feature. While The Angry Birds Movie boasts an incredibly talented comedic voice cast that includes Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Bill Hader and the May 20 release date sees very little competition in regards to drawing in younger viewers, there still remain doubts surrounding the property's ability to entice its huge mobile audience into the theater.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
