Predicting 10 Biggest Box Office Movie Bombs Of 2016

3. The Legend Of Tarzan

Ever since the character first appeared in print all the way back in 1912, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan has become one of the most frequently-adapted characters in the history of popular culture whether it be in literature, radio, television or film. This year sees the first major live-action movie based on the 'Lord of the Apes' since the critically-derided box office bomb Tarzan and the Lost City in 1998, this time backed by a major studio, impressive cast and blockbuster budget. Despite having a safe pair of hands behind the camera in David Yates and Alexander Skarsgard's title hero backed by a hugely talented ensemble that includes Margot Robbie, Samuel L Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Djimon Honsou, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent, it remains to be seen if modern audiences will relate to a character that first appeared in print over 100 years ago. After all, the likes of John Carter, Dracula Untold and most recently Pan have failed to turn famous literary characters into successful blockbusters. The first trailer opted for a more somber and serious approach, which seems to be standard procedure for every major reboot these days and although the CGI for the apes was incredibly impressive, the footage of Tarzan himself seemed a bit ropey. Warner Bros. must be confident in giving the project a prime July 1st release date, but the sheer volume of competition could prove to be the movie's downfall. Opening on the same date as Steven Spielberg's The BFG and shortly after Finding Dory and Independence Day: Resurgence, The Legend of Tarzan is soon joined in a crowded marketplace by the Ghostbusters reboot, Ice Age: Collision Course, Star Trek Beyond and Bourne 5. Budgeted at $180m, when you factor in marketing costs the movie needs to earn at least $350m worldwide just to break even, which is a tough proposition for a character that isn't particularly relevant to the modern movie-goer.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
