Predicting 20 Comic Book Movies Announced In 2017

7. Sinister Six

Wolverine Movie
Sony Pictures Releasing/Marvel

With Venom already announced as a stand-alone spin-off (as well as the Black Cat/Silver Sable team-up), it looks like Sony are going heavy on their plans to mimic Fox's approach to an expanded universe by having alternate universe spin-offs.

A potential Sinister Six movie always looked like the most likely candidate for the expansion treatment when The Amazing Spider-Man movies were being made. Sony were very obviously building to the team-up, and it was only the sequel's underwhelming reception that killed it.

Or maybe it was just a matter of the spin-off going on ice while the studio allowed Marvel to build up goodwill for Spider-Man as a screen presence once more before they revealed they actually still plan to make their villain-driven ensemble?

Evidence?

The fact that both of the already announced spin-off movies still exist after being planned as spin-offs to The Amazing Spider-Man movies suggests that the other movie mentioned in those initial plans could too.

We never officially received word that Sinister Six was cancelled, and even as the MCU deal for Spidey dominated news, there was still a hum of rumours that it was only on hiatus. Assuming Spider-Man: Homecoming does well, Sony would be silly not to capitalise on the hype by announcing even more expanded universe movies.
