Predicting 20 Comic Book Movies Announced In 2017
13. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Though X-Men: Apocalypse wasn't as critically lauded as the films before it, it wasn't a terrible film by any means, and it certainly wasn't bad enough to kill the franchise as some suggested at the time. Intriguingly, it also introduced some new characters - including Nightcrawler, Cyclops and Jean Grey - and opened up the possibility for their stories to be told.
The film also went pretty heavy on Grey's future transformation into Dark Phoenix, foreshadowing that development for another sequel, and that establishing work was so firm that there's no way they aren't following through.
Evidence?
Though it hasn't yet been confirmed, we already know that there's another X-Men movie coming - and that it has the working title of Supernova. The assumption that it's a Dark Phoenix film is mostly down to common sense.
Simon Kinberg has directly acknowledged that the film exists too, and that he might be directing it in place of Bryan Singer:
"They didn’t announce it, somebody broke a story about it that’s premature, but we have been talking about what the next X-Men movie would be since post-production on the last X-Men movie. We are prepping the film, can’t say much more than that, but we’re excited to get back into telling the story of the mainland X-Men."
