Predicting Summer 2016's Highest Grossing Movies

7. Independence Day: Resurgence

Box Office Prediction: $660 million Why It'll Be A Hit: The original Independence Day made a jaw-dropping $817.4 back in 1996, which adjusted for 2016 inflation would come out at around $1.23 billion. The marketing is heavily playing on the huge nostalgia for and popularity of the original film, which all-but-guarantees that the $200 million disaster flick won't have a problem making its money back. Why It Could Disappoint: The lack of Will Smith will be massively disappointing to many, plus it's possible that too long has passed for mainstream audiences to actually care about a sequel, especially as the new cast members aren't particularly famous and so won't bring a ton of star power to proceedings. Then there's the fact that Resurgence opens a week before The BFG and The Legend of Tarzan, two weeks before The Secret Life of Pets, three weeks before Ghostbusters, and a month before Ice Age: Collision Course and Star Trek Beyond, all of which could seriously take a bite out of its potential audience.
