6. Best Supporting Actress - Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter)

Since breaking through in 2016, Irish actress Jessie Buckley has been steadily building one of the best resumes in the business. On TV and film she has excelled in the likes of Wild Rose, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, Fargo, and Chernobyl. That quartet demonstrates an enviable range, but for sheer power, it doesn’t get better than her recent turn in The Lost Daughter.

She plays the younger version of Leda Caruso, portrayed by Olivia Coleman for the primary, present tense segments of the film. Acting in the same role as a heavyweight like Coleman is no mean feat, but Buckley pulls it off more than admirably.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s supremely accomplished directorial debut is an unvarnished film about motherhood, and many of the most difficult moments are given over to Buckley. Tasked with explaining how this flawed, impetuous character came to be where she is today, Buckley embraces the more difficult sides of Lena but remains understandable without ever trying to gain our sympathy.
