7. Best Original Screenplay - The Worst Person In The World

A big hit at last year’s Cannes festival, this romantic comedy drama directed by Joachim Trier has cult hit written all over it. Like most films of its nature, it’s buoyed by its star Renate Reinsve (herself hugely unlucky not to be nominated) and its script by Trier and Eskil Vogt.

In Reinsve’s character Julie, the writers have an instant classic creation, a painfully relatable millennial icon. Julie is a young woman adrift in life. She begins the film as a medical student with a path ahead of her, but on the back of an epiphany chucks it all to follow an alternate route, be that a new career she picks up on a whim or the pursuit of love.

We follow Julie for just about the entirety of the film’s screen time and she’s a beautifully written character, in turn winningly open and optimistic, frustratingly self destructive, brave and foolish.

It’s a film that should speak to younger viewers particularly as they empathise with Julie’s efforts to find her place in life, but it’s a must-watch for anyone who enjoys films about people. A gem from Norway to be enjoyed before the inevitable remake or Amazon adaptation.
