Predicting The Next 10 Billion Dollar Movies
3. Jurassic Park 5
It would be fair to say that the box office success of Jurassic World took many people by surprise when it hit theaters in June 2015. It had been 14 years since Jurassic Park III had seemingly ended the franchise with a whimper on the back of a tepid critical and commercial performance but the performance of Colin Trevorrow's sequel/reboot was nothing short of astonishing.
While many of its box office records only stood for a few months until The Force Awakens came along, that doesn't make the achievements any less impressive. When the dust had settled, Jurassic World had become the third-highest grossing movie in history with a worldwide gross of over $1.6bn and cemented its status as an entertaining (yet somewhat empty) big-budget crowdpleaser.
Jurassic World's success was hardly a passing fad either, as it earned a further $130.2m in the United States alone on the supposedly 'dying' home video market, ensuring repeat viewings and keeping anticipation high for the follow-up.
While Jurassic Park 5/Jurassic World 2/Whatever They End Up Calling It likely won't reach the lofty financial goals set by its predecessor, even with added Jeff Goldblum, it is a lock to earn $1bn at the very least. Its not often that a sequel earning only two-thirds of its predecessor's box office would be considered a success, but in this case it would be.
