Project X: 5 Reasons Why It's A Nasty Piece of Filmmaking

2. Style

projectx_main The found footage genre has become a popular trend in recent years. It€™s effective use in horror (The Blair Witch Project, REC, The Last Exorcism) and thriller (Trollhunter, Chronicle) genres clearly inspired Mr. Phillips into thinking this would translate well into the teenage house party film. While it is a nice idea, Project X uses it to leer at teenage party-goers, and as previously mentioned, a focus on topless females. Large sections of the film comprise of pounding music and shots of teenager taking ecstasy, drinking to excess and copping off with one another. If we are supposed to sit in our seats, gawping at what is in front of us thinking how amazing it all is, then I for one am extremely worried if this now passes for entertainment. For something that is clearly meant to be €˜awesome€™ and €˜mental€™, it was mundane and I was bored extremely quickly. €˜Oh wow look, another teenager doing naughty things! Let€™s record it on a handheld mobile because that€™s modern and what the kids are doing€™ 88 minutes of this is tiresome and does little to stimulate the mind, except maybe developing some sort of mental-health condition.
