Prometheus 2: 8 Fan Theories For What To Expect

5. The Black Goo Could Be Revealed As A Means Of Evolution (Instead Of A Weapon)

In Prometheus, the "black goo" provided fans with one of the most frustrating and intriguing aspects of the film - all in one package. Officially known as "The Black Substance," this mysterious liquid is known for its ability to both create and destroy life, as witnessed in Prometheus' prologue sequence. There are many theories regarding its purpose (and how and why it begins to "work"), with some suggesting that it kicks in when it's exposed to sin. Generally, it's assume that the substance is bad because whatever it touches is suddenly entangled in a life cycle process that results in an early version of a Xenomorph. Why, exactly, nobody knows, and Prometheus doesn't do a particularly good job of explaining anything in much detail for the length of its parts. It's - quite frankly - a bit of a mess. One fan theory suggests that this goo is, in fact, the most important part of the entire Prometheus franchise - that is is actually a tool that destroys whatever it touches in order to begin a process of evolution. Essentially, the substance is a means of progression, and Prometheus 2 could very easily see Shaw and David coming to terms with this idea. David's ambiguous mission in Prometheus, after all, seemed poised on him finding out what the point of the strange substance was at any cost, and some believe that he will make it his mission in Prometheus 2 to spread this mysterious substance around the galaxy. Whatever happens, it makes sense that in the next installment it will play a major part in the development of the overall narrative.
