6. Loss
Prometheus deals not only with the theme of loss, but with how your beliefs might change as a result of that loss. We see not only loss of life (to Ridleys bestiary of fantastically rendered chimera-like creatures and mutants) but also loss of innocence, and loss of ignorance too. Events quickly coalesce into a series of cataclysmic screw-ups for Doctor Shaw, who loses the two great loves of her life: physically- her partner Dr Holloway, and spiritually- her unwavering faith and conviction that our creators were benevolent benefactors with all the answers to lifes previously unanswerable questions. Coupled with the fact that she has just given birth to her unwanted alien progeny you might forgive Shaw for wanting to head back to Earth and check into therapy, but she is resolute in her desire to continue to the Engineer home-world and address the question why did they change their minds and want to destroy us, and who created them? Shaw's faith has been shaken to the core. But her desire for answers remains, because "no man needs nothing..."
