Quentin Tarantino: Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

Jackie Brown

9. Sid Haig Lives Here Too

When Jackie checks the tenant list outside Melanie's apartment building we see the name "S. Haig", which was included as a reference to Blaxploitation genre veteran Sid Haig, who played alongside Pam Grier in various Blaxploitation films and who was also cast in the role of the judge who sends Jackie to prison. The list also includes J. Hill, in homage to Foxy Brown director Jack Hill.

8. The Big Dollhouse

One of the biggest sub-genres amongst exploitation flicks in the 70s was based around the idea of "women in prison" - this basically granted audiences bursts of bloody violence and scenes of a sexual nature, usually between the uncommonly beautiful inmates and their captors. Pam Grier was one of the biggest stars in this genre - arguably her most famous venture was The Big Dollhouse, a movie for which she sung the main theme song, "Long Time Woman." This song is used in the film during the scene when - cleverly - Jackie Brown is put in jail.

7. The Killer

At one point in the movie, Ordell Robbie tells Louis that the customers who want to buy guns from him always want two guns, not one, "because they all wanna be The Killer." This is a reference to the John Woo Hong Kong action flick of the same which, which starred Chow Yung Fat. In The Killer (and John Woo films in general), characters are often seen stylishly wielding two pistols at once.
