Ranking 9 Biggest Two-Part Movies From Worst To Best
7. Hunger Games: Mockingjay
The Hunger Games film franchise hit a high note with Catching Fire. It was an exponentially better film than the first one, with a sure hand in the director's chair in the form of Francis Lawrence, with a great cliffhanger ending that naturally flowed into the trilogy-capper.
But then, Lionsgate went and got greedy, and announced that they would also be splitting their final book into two films. This meant that Mockingjay Part I was exclusively focused on elements that didn't get much play in the book. It devoted its entire two-hour-plus runtime to chronicling how the rebel forces aim to use Katniss as a political propaganda device to turn the tides of war. As one can imagine, this did not make for the most cinematically thrilling experience. But at least it provided ample build up for what was sure to be a genuine finale in the form of Mockingjay Part II, right?
Not exactly.
Part II wound up essentially being the story of how Katniss and her crew walked through the war zone after the war had already been fought. Its action sequences were solid, but few and far between, leaving audiences with a story that would have worked incredibly well as a single two-and-half-hour film, but dragged to a ludicrous degree when made into four-hours-plus of two films.
