Ranking All 22 Major Summer 2016 Blockbusters From Worst To Best

12. Independence Day: Resurgence

Summer 2016
20th Century Fox

Independence Day: Resurgence might well be the stupidest film released this year, but it is so gloriously self-aware that it becomes part of the pleasure of it.

Rather than worrying about translating the classic alien invasion tale to a modern framework, Roland Emmerich instead decided to go absolutely bonkers instead. The world is unrecognisable thanks to the remaining technology left by the first wave, but the same narrative quirks prevail. Major characters seem incredibly - almost unscientifically - capable of avoiding death when millions around them die, for instance.

Sure, the plot - of a second wave responding to an SOS signal and the introduction of a single Apple-designed alien entity with the key to beat them - is ludicrous, but once you realise it's actually a comedy in the vein of Starship Troopers, there's a lot to love. Just don't pick at it too much or expect anything that is remotely awards-worthy.
