13. Now You See Me 2

Summer 2016
Lionsgate

Now You See Me was very much a case of a strong concept over-shadowing a solid but unspectacular film: the Oceans Eleven with magicians heist traded well on an element of mystery that gave the ultimate twist added gloss.

Unfortunately, the sequel mostly missed out on the magic in a bottle captured by its predecessor. In attempting to dial up the twists and the "cleverness", Now You See Me 2 is too convoluted for its own good, missing out on the necessary substance and charm to back up those narrative machinations.

Ironically for a film about magic tricks, it fundamentally misses that the art of the trick is in the telling and not just in the pay-off, and it really doesn't do well enough to reward those audience members sticking around for the end.

It's a shame too, because both Lizzie Caplan and Daniel Radcliffe are great additions, it's just what remained from the first time that wasn't really up to their level.
