Ranking All 22 Major Summer 2016 Blockbusters From Worst To Best

9. Sausage Party

Summer 2016
Columbia Pictures

There's no way Sausage Party should have worked. As an idea, it's genius, but it's he kind of skit that works either as a Family Guy cut-away or as a short designed to lampoon the traditions of mainstream family friendly animations. For it to be stretched across a feature length run with the major selling point being profanity and R-rated naughtiness, and for that not really to impact its quality or its staying power is pretty remarkable.

There are sections that would obviously land with some audience members more than others: indeed the gag spectrum runs from gentle and silly to Adolf Hitler as a bottle of sauerkraut planning to "exterminate the Juice" with some homophobia and casual racial slurs along the way.

The film is best when it is lampooning the likes of Pixar and Dreamworks, but it doesn't happen much, and you're left having to try and enjoy a hotdog wanting to f*ck a bun and an escalation that turns it first into a blood bath and then into a sexy free-for-all with some of the most haunting images of food sex you'll ever encounter. Amazingly, it's not at all hard to find lots of disposable enjoyment in both.
