Ranking All 7 Superhero Movies From 2016 In Order Of Anticipation
5. Suicide Squad
Were it nor for the outstanding trailer that was premiered at San Diego Comic-Con, this one would have probably been at the bottom of the list. The idea of a movie filled with B-list DC villains didn't have too many people fired up, especially considering that outside of Batman, DC has had very little luck translating their iconic characters to the big screen. That trailer changed everything. Some of the initial casting announcements were suspect. Will Smith as Deadshot? The Robocop guy? Jared Leto doing yet another interpretation of The Joker? And then that first image of Leto's Joker was released, looking like his origin story was that he fell in a vat of mommy issues and Hot Topic, and the internet blew up with pessimistic assumptions. But then the trailer gave us a first glimpse of these thespians in action: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in particular sold well. From the few captivating moments she's onscreen she both captures the essence of Harley and adds her own twist to her, and it looks awesome, while Smith appears to embody Floyd Lawton better than expected. The real star of the trailer, though, was The Joker. Leto looks to be a unique blend of crime lord and horror movie monster; his few seconds onscreen are very unsettling and it's hard not to want to see more immediately. Add in an appearance from Batman and you've got all the makings of what could be a classic. The dark and gritty feel of the movie is apparent and the belief persists that it will be an R-rated affair. That's a risk if DC chooses to go that route, but then again any movie with "suicide" in the title shouldn't exactly be considered family fare to begin with.
