Ranking All The Major SDCC 2016 Movie Trailers From Worst To Best
7. Blair Witch
How do you measure the quality of a trailer when it's all centred on one big reveal? Was Captain America: Civil War's second trailer great, or was it just the reveal of Spider-Man?
The same is true of Adam Wingard's latest. The first trailer, scored to a breathy cover of Every Breath You Take, was the more effective piece of blind advertising, but the second, Comic-Con version ended with the rather chilling title Blair Witch, which was what really got people talking. Yes, like Cloverfield a couple of months ago, they've secretly made (another) sequel to the found footage smash hit.
It's a genius marketing trick, allowing people to get excited for a film before leaning on the requisite franchise connection, but does overshadow what's actually in the rest of the tease. And, that being said, it's pretty standard horror fare. The critic quotes are nice and there's a good mix off moody imagery and shock set-up, but I'm not sure it would have hit as hard without its names attached.
But hey, it had enough cool teases and odd supernatural inflections to make me want to see it more, so it did something right.
