Box Office: Demolition was never going to set the box office on fire, but even so, its opening weekend was a pathetic $1.1 million, making it a rare box office bomb starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Verdict: Though it sometimes devolves into indie movie quirkiness and features a protagonist some audiences will struggle to warm to, it's hard to argue with the persuasive power of Gyllenhaal's central performance, yet another in a long line of challenging and audacious turns from him.

Those craving more concrete emotional beats and clear moments of catharsis may not find the film's dramatic vagaries compelling enough, but in refusing to tie everything off neatly, Demolition definitely feels more true to life.
