11. The Promise

RottenTomatoes Score: 48% (5.7/10)

Box Office: Somehow costing a ludicrous $90 million, the controversial historical drama has made a pitiful $5 million worldwide to date. Blame the film's divisive politics, the lack of awards season release date, bad marketing or simple lack of audience interest, but this one's a colossal bomb all the same.

Verdict: The most disappointing thing about this film isn't that it doesn't take full advantage of Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac's talents, but that after all of the pre-release brouhaha, The Promise is actually a surprisingly dull outing for the most part.

Feeling every second of its 134-minute run-time and then some, this is a simplistic cliff notes look at the Armenian Genocide, suffused with a snooze-inducing love triangle that does none of the three leads any favours.

It's worth a go if you're super-interested in the subject matter, but it'll be a struggle for most others, even though Isaac in particular tries his damnedest to make it work.
