Rotten Tomatoes Score: 27% (4.7/10) Box Office: Despite the source material being written by Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn, Dark Places had practically zero marketing presence ahead of its pathetic 151-theater release (before which it'd already had a VOD release in June), so its box office total of $195,000 after over 3 weeks on release (not to mention an early international rollout) isn't too surprising. A total dud. The Verdict: Even with an incredible cast including Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Moretz, Corey Stoll and Tye Sheridan, Dark Places lacks the grim intensity of the source material, stranding Theron in particular with a dull cipher of a character who's not exactly easy to care much about. Sadly, despite the inherent promise, this one's weirdly dull, too long and writer-director Gilles Paquet-Brenner handles the book's various twists and turns without much finesse at all.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
