9. American Ultra
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 46% (5.5/10) Box Office: Even though it only cost $12 million, American Ultra still only made $5.5 million in its first weekend, and while it will surely crawl to make its budget back eventually, it's still very disappointing. The failure caused the movie's outspoken writer, Max Landis, to ask on Twitter, "Are original ideas over?" The Verdict: Easily one of the biggest missed opportunities of the year so far, American Ultra certainly isn't a bad film at all, but it fails to make the most of its juicy stoner Jason Bourne premise, instead settling for a fitfully entertaining effort that's also strangely generic from time to time. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart do a fine job with the material, and their relationship is fun to observe, but the film is much less interesting when it introduces the manhunt plot. The action is solid, but the tone shifts so jarringly that the final product is more likely to leave viewers in a disorientated haze than gently amused, and the plot twist doesn't really work.
