Ranking August 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best

16. Ben-Hur

Suicide Squad Nine Lives Kubo And The Two Strings
Paramount Pictures

RottenTomatoes Score: 28% (4.8/10)

Box Office: As expected, the $100 million epic remake nobody asked for was a calamitous box office bust, grossing just $11.2 million in its opening weekend. Analysts predict that it will lose Paramount up to $100 million when all costs are considered.

Verdict: Though Timur Bekmambetov's (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) needless stab at the 1959 Charlton Heston-starring classic is an easy punchbag, it's not quite as bad as you might be expecting.

Yes, casting someone as unknown as Jack Huston in the lead role was a major mistake, the action is frequently choppy, Morgan Freeman's dreadlocks are tough not to laugh at and the dialogues are frequently dull, but there is entertainment value to be found here...albeit intermittently.

The focal chariot race sequence is well-executed for the most part and the central conflict between Huston and Toby Kebbell's characters largely works, though you'll still be left wondering why the movie exists.
