Box Office: Made for a moderate $60 million, the long-awaited Stephen King adaptation nevertheless crumbled amid bad reviews and atrocious marketing, and to date has only barely made its cost back. The promising start of a franchise this is not, then.

Verdict: Though Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey and young Tom Taylor do solid work with what they have...it sadly ain't much at all.

King acolytes and newbies alike will probably find this overly rushed, weirdly dull fantasy flick to lean too heavily on young adult cliches, while failing to make the most of the game cast or turn in especially interesting action or drama.

Basically, a flat, messy attempt to bring King's beloved material to the screen. Not without some decent moments here and there, but a major disappointment overall.
