Box Office: The $40 million adaptation of the classic manga went direct to Netflix, so nothing to see here.

Verdict: First off, fans of the source material are probably going to hate this, while those not acquainted with the manga or anime will have a much easier time dealing with its trashy, nonsensical narrative.

Director Adam Wingard does fine work behind the camera, and Willem Dafoe gives a memorably menacing performance as the demon Ryuk, but at just 100 minutes in length, the plot feels incredibly rushed, and most of the emotional beats fall flat as a result.

There's plenty of good in here, but Wingard speeds through it so fast you'll probably be left wishing they made a mini-series instead.
